THE WORK OF BELLA THORNTON
WRITER/PERFORMER
FINALIST AT THE LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL SCREENPLAY COMPETITION
As a storyteller, sex, drugs, and Mormonism are my bread and butter. I grew up a geeky little Mormon girl in Utah, writing scripts and shooting short films between church and my night gig as a child actor at my dad's haunted circus. I've trained at The Second City, RADA, and am currently based in LA, because I have visceral, funny, and brutal stories to tell.

THE LOVE OF MY LIFE
I’ve dedicated my life, my body, the skin on my back, and the laughter in my throat to creating stories. "Honey," my most recent short film, is the story of Jane Andrews, who loses her virginity and discovers the rapid decomposition of her body into honey in the course of one bad night. It’s funny, messy, occasionally heartbreaking, and abidingly raw. So why did I write and produce a script that included making myself a human ant trap, bathing in scalding hot water, and recording audio for terribly awkward sex scenes? Because I absolutely love what I do as an actor and writer. There’s electricity to creating laughter with talented people and sharing that laughter with an audience. It takes curiosity and experimentation, and real intentions of abiding love. I’m bettering myself through my education and immersion into a talented community of artists because I think the art we can create could be important. My body hums when it’s time to create laughter, to build a story, large or small.

“I suppose I walk that line between comedy and cruelty because I think one illuminates the other. We're all cruel, aren't we? We are all extreme in one way or another at times and that's what drama, since the Greeks, has dealt with. I hope the overall view isn't just that though, or I've failed in my writing. There have to be moments when you glimpse something decent, something life-affirming even in the most twisted character. That's where the real art lies.”
